This school week began and ended with a holiday! Monday, February 10 is Family Day in British Columbia. Family Day is a statutory holiday which means that schools, government offices, businesses, and a majority of stores are not open. The purpose of Family Day is for people to take advantage of their day off of work or school to spend quality time with their families. Numerous activities were available in the community that the whole family could participate in. Valentine's Day was on Friday, February 14. This is not a statutory holiday, but rather, a traditional cultural holiday that celebrates love. There are various legends as to how Valentine's Day came about; you will read about three of these legends in class. In Canada, it is common to give your loved one(s) candy, cards, and flowers. Restaurants are also busy, as many couples go out to have a romantic dinner together.
Assignment this week: Students in block 3 ELL class are to write a paragraph on their family. Remember that a paragraph must have a topic sentence, 3-5 supporting sentences, and a concluding sentence. After you and a classmate have edited your paragraph, rewrite it on your Weebly blog. It would be great if you can add a picture or two of your family. Your blog entry must be completed by Thursday, February 20.
