The following multi-paragraph essay was written collaboratively by all of the students in Blk. 4 ELL class:
McQueen Lake
On Friday, January 10th, our ESL class, along with many other International Students and New Canadians, went to McQueen Lake. McQueen Lake is an environmental centre, built beside a lake, which is owned by School District 73. The purpose of McQueen Lake is to teach students about nature and outdoor activities.
Last Friday, we learned how to play hockey, to snowshoe, and to build a winter shelter. One of the activity we learned at McQueen Lake was how to play hockey. First of all, we had to wear proper clothing to protect ourselves from injury. We had 5 people on each team plus one goalie, and we had 4 hockey teams, so when one team scored a goal another team was in. We learned to hold the hockey stick properly and how to hit the ball. At McQueen Lake, most of us were playing hockey for the first time, so a couple of students were injured. We did have a lot of fun and now we know how to play hockey better and to not hurt ourselves.
The second activity we did was to go snowshoeing. Snowshoeing is an activity where you have to walk on the snow. We walked on the lake and the mountain, and it made us feel tired. Before we did snowshoeing, the teacher told us about the safety rules, and to always wait for each other. A snowshoe has 2 bindings and 1 sharp edge. It makes us never slip in the snow and ice. We really enjoyed trying snowshoeing, but we don‘t want to do it again because it was so hard to do!
Finally, we learned to build a snow shelter. A snow shelter protects us when we are lost in the snow. We had to shovel snow to make a hole. In addition, we could use some branches to intercept the wind. Other students had snowball fights and made snow angels beside the shelter. We took some pictures. It was fun to make snow shelters.
Most of the students in our class had a good time last Friday at McQueen Lake. We learned how to do a lot of things such as playing hockey, snowshoeing and making a snow shelter. Except for a couple of people, we would all like to go to McQueen Lake again.
